Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She was 96 when she died. The late queen was a fashion icon and also possessed the most expensive jewellery collection in the world. Among her most famous neckpieces was one given to her by the Nizam of Hyderabad as a wedding present in 1947.
Asaf Jah VII was the monarch (or Nizam) of Hyderabad, which was then ruled by the British. He was one of the world’s richest men, so he could afford to buy the princess a truly amazing wedding present. He then fulfilled every diamond lover’s dream by instructing Cartier to let the princess choose anything from their existing stock for her present. When you think about it, that was akin to handing her one of the nicest gift cards ever.

The Nizam instructed Cartier in London to select a wedding gift for Princess Elizabeth herself, and this platinum necklace encrusted with around 300 diamonds was chosen. The necklace was worn by the Queen throughout her reign, and it was also loaned to The Duchess of Cambridge.

He also gave the queen the famed Hyderabad Tiara, which was based on English flowers and featured three detachable floral brooches composed of diamonds and set in platinum.

Both pieces were set with diamonds in platinum. The necklace, designed by Cartier in 1935, features elaborate work with additional geometric diamonds nested in an abstract flower motif.
